Tuition Reimbursement

Full Time
After the completion of six months of employment, tuition for approved courses will be reimbursed at 100%, to a maximum reimbursement of $2,500 per calendar year.
Part Time
Same requirements as full time but with a $1,250 maximum per calendar year.


North Park University Discount

Two graduate programs at North Park University offer tuition discounts to full-time employees of Swedish Covenant Hospital: The School of Business & Nonprofit Management offers a 25% discount on all programs, and North Park Theological Seminary offers a 33% discount on all programs (except for summer class which are already discounted.) North Park University discount applications are available in Human Resources.

Educational Savings Programs

Section 529 plans offer employees a convenient, tax-free way to save for college. Our financial vendors offer a variety of Section 529 plans, including BrightStart, which is the Section 529 program sponsored by the state of Illinois. Section 529 plans can be used for paying qualified expenses incurred while attending most accredited institutions of higher education in the U.S. - including public and private schools, out-of-state schools, graduate schools and certain vocational schools.


Computer And Electronic Discounts

Swedish Covenant Hospital, along with Dell and CDW, have come together to offer an Employee Purchase program (EPP) for your personal computing and electronic purchases. Swedish Covenant Hospital wants to help employees and their family access the latest computer and electronics technologies in your home. We are pleased to be able to offer employees discounts on the purchase of computers through Dell and discounts on computing and electronics products through CDW. Both Dell and CDW have extended their volume pricing for your personal purchases on any products Dell.com and CDW.com have to offer. Employees can place orders online or over the phone.

Training And Education

Swedish Covenant Hospital invests in the continuous education of our employees and managers. The management team supports employee promotion from within the Hospital and mentors and coaches employees in their positions and overall professional development.

The Educational Programming department offers many opportunities for training and education through out the year. There are a variety of classes available for employees including: HeartSaver CPR, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), the Nursing Preceptor program, clinical development programs, software training, wellness programs and other continuing education courses.


Ethics Programs

Ethics for Breakfast and Lunch
These bi-monthly sessions are open to all Swedish Covenant Hospital employees. The purpose of Ethics for Breakfast and Lunch is to raise awareness of ethical challenges in health care. The breakfast and lunch format allows the topic to evolve into a lively, insightful discussion. All employees are invited to attend these programs. Date and time information is printed in the Learning Curve, posters and overhead announcements.

Nursing Ethics Forum
Swedish Covenant Hospital's Nursing Ethics Forum is comprised of nursing employees from all units and is always open to new members. These bi-monthly ethics meetings feature peer support, case discussion and ongoing ethics resources and healthcare education. Please let your manager know if you are interested in participating in this exciting ethical forum.

Ethics Resource Team
Swedish Covenant Hospital's clinical ethicist and five other skilled ethics committee members are available to all employees to assist with ethics-related questions or concerns.


Health Sciences Library

The Stromberg Health Sciences Library provides high-quality information, educational services and resources to support hospital employees. The library is available to all employees, nurses, physicians and residents during hospital business hours. The library subscribes to over 125 journal titles, including medical and non-medical literature and texts. More than 100 books are purchased annually to maintain an up-to-date collection. All employees are encouraged to contact the library for a short orientation session. Library services include: literature searches, free access to Medline, CINAHL and the Internet as well as ready reference, interlibrary loans, bibliographic instructions and circulation services.


Communication

Swedish Covenant Hospital Intranet
The Hospital has an Intranet site, which employees can use as a resource for corporate information, department information, hospital services, phone and pager numbers and employment opportunity listings. Employee benefit information and important phone numbers are also listed on the Hospital's Intranet.

NewsViews
NewsViews is the monthly employee newsletter that fosters communication among Swedish Covenant Hospital staff, volunteers and administration. The publication features photos and articles on hospital services, special events, personal and departmental achievements, announcements, tips and a message from the CEO.

The Learning Curve
Learning Curve is an educational newsletter for the employees and associates of Swedish Covenant Hospital. Learning Curve articles focus on job education, customer service, cultural diversity, institutional knowledge and other important learning topics.

Neighbors in Health
Neighbors in Health is published three times a year to inform young families in the community about health services Swedish Covenant Hospital provides for children and young adults. Employees can stay updated on new pediatric services and health information, as well as child-friendly community activities.

Well Magazine
In supporting a healthy community, Swedish Covenant Hospital publishes Well, a wellness magazine for the urban women of Chicago's North Side. The magazine, which is published quarterly, takes a broad approach to addressing the health and wellness of our female consumers, using hospital staff, physicians and community partners as expert sources where appropriate. An innovative marketing tool, the complimentary free magazine is available at the Book Cellar, Women & Children First Bookstore, the Chopping Block and Sir Spa.


Create And Innovate

IDEA Line & Suggestion Boxes
Swedish Covenant Hospital invites you to tell us your ideas! The Guest Relations Committee is pleased to announce the Customer Satisfaction IDEA line. You can call "I-D-E-A" (ext. 4332) anytime (24 hours) with your constructive suggestions for improving guest relations, patient safety or quality at Swedish Covenant Hospital. The hospital has employee suggestion boxes located throughout the facility. All suggestions for improvement are presented at Executive Team meetings and designated to the appropriate division to introduce ideas for future changes.

Open Forum Meetings
The Executive Team at Swedish Covenant Hospital values the ideas and suggestions of all employees. Communication among all departments and individuals is facilitated through a series of Open Forum Meetings several times a year. This interactive meeting is a great opportunity for employees to learn about the future plans of the Hospital and express their ideas for improvement and innovation.

Open Door Communication
with Management

Swedish Covenant Hospital maintains an "open door" atmosphere, which encourages the healthy communication of all employees. The president is available to all employees and Swedish Covenant Hospital committees regularly survey employees for ideas and feedback for future changes. Employees are encouraged to participate on committees and get involved with improvement initiatives.


Junior Achievement

Junior Achievement's mission is to educate and inspire young people to value free enterprise, business, and economics in order to improve the quality of their lives. Swedish Covenant Hospital partners with Junior Achievement to provide employees with rewarding and challenging opportunities to share knowledge and experience with students of all ages. This volunteering opportunity is intended for employees to do in their "non-work" time.


Swede Readers Book Club

The Swede Readers Book Club meets the second Thursday of every other month (January, March, May, July, September and November) in the Titus Johnson Room in Anderson Pavilion at noon. Book selections are determined by the club and are announced three to four months in advance.


Book Exchange

Pick up a book at the Swedish Covenant Hospital book exchange. Located on the shelves in the Main Building outside the entryway to the pedestrian walkway to the Galter Medical Pavilion, the Swede Reader Book Swap area is a place where you can pass the books you've enjoyed on to your co-workers or find your next must-read selection. All hospital staff members are welcome to peruse the shelves. Just make sure you replace anything you take with a donation of your own! The Book Swap shelves are one the left side of the door to the walkway, an area that provides all staff 24-hour access.
